Een veelwetende, witte adelaar zit in den kruin des booms; tusschen zijne oogen zweeft de havik Wedrf\u00f6lnir, en het eekhoorntje Ratat\u00f6skur loopt langs den stam op en neder, en zoekt tweedragt te stichten tussen den adelaar en den draak of de slang Nidh\u00f6ggur, die in de diepte ligt. Vier herten eindelijk: Dain, Dvalin, Duneyr en Dyrathror, staan in de takken, knagen aan de bladeren en vreten de jonge knoppen af. Daarom heet het: IJgdrasill.<\/em><\/p>\n

Yggdrasil<\/strong>\u00a0groeit uit de Bron van Urd\u00a0, en vertegenwoordigt dus het heden. Het water van de bron wordt door de boom geabsorbeerd, stroomt omhoog langs de wortels en takken, vormt uiteindelijk dauw op de bladeren en valt terug in de Bron van Urd<\/p>\n

Yggdrasil<\/span><\/b>\u00a0is de\u00a0wereldboom<\/span>\u00a0in de\u00a0Noordse kosmogonie<\/span>. De naam laat zich letterlijk vertalen als ‘paard van Yggr’, oftewel ‘paard van\u00a0Odin<\/span>‘, en verwijst naar de felle levenskracht die hem draagt en overal heen voert.<\/span><\/p>\n

Yggdrasil is de\u00a0levensboom<\/span>\u00a0en\u00a0kennisboom<\/span>, het symbool van de eindeloos vertakte vorm van dat wat is. Tegelijk draagt en verbindt hij de werelden als wereld-as (axis <\/span>mundi<\/span>). Deze toont tegelijk de weg naar het hogere, de weg die de\u00a0sjamaan<\/span>\u00a0volgt om in het gebied van\u00a0goden<\/span>\u00a0en\u00a0geesten<\/span> te komen. Hij reikt van de onderwereld dwars door de mensenwereld naar de wereld van goden en helden.<\/span><\/p>\n

De negen werelden die Yggdrasill verbindt<\/strong><\/p>\n

  1. Asgaard, de wereld der\u00a0Asen<\/li>\n
  2. \u00c1lfheimr, de wereld der lichtelfen<\/li>\n
  3. Muspelheim, de vuurwereld<\/li>\n
  4. Vanaheim, het rijk der\u00a0vruchtbaarheidsgoden; de\u00a0Vanir<\/li>\n
  5. Midgard, de wereld der\u00a0mensen<\/li>\n
  6. J\u00f6tunheim, de wereld der\u00a0J\u00f6tuns<\/li>\n
  7. Niflheim, het rijk der nevelen; hier huisden de doden<\/li>\n
  8. Svartalfheim(of\u00a0Nidavellir), de wereld der\u00a0zwartelfen\u00a0of\u00a0dwergen<\/li>\n
  9. Helheim, de woonplaats van de godin Hel<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

    1. Mythische wezens<\/strong>\n
        \n
      • Hoog in de kruin waakt de tweekoppige\u00a0adelaar Vi\u00f0ofnir\u00a0als symbool van licht en alom helder zien. Hij zorgt met zijn vleugels voor\u00a0wind\u00a0over de werelden.<\/li>\n
      • Daar zit in sommige voorstellingen ook een wakkere haan en twee haviken die de goden waarschuwen bij onraad. In andere voorstellingen zit de havik\u00a0Vedrfolnirop het voorhoofd van de arend of zelfs in zijn oog.<\/li>\n
      • Onder de twijgen houden de goden gerecht.<\/li>\n
      • Onderaan de wortels kronkelen de oerslangen\u00a0G\u00f3innen\u00a0M\u00f3inn\u00a0die van\u00a0Grafvitnir\u00a0(Grafwolf) afstammen, en vreet de\u00a0draak\u00a0Nidhogg\u00a0(symbool van de duistere macht) de wortel aan.<\/li>\n
      • Rond de stam leven vier herten met grote vertakte geweien,\u00a0D\u00e1inn,\u00a0Dvalinn,\u00a0Duneyrren\u00a0Dura\u00fer\u00f3r. Die leven van de schors en de onderste bladeren en vruchten.<\/li>\n
      • De\u00a0eekhoorn Ratatoskr\u00a0is boodschapper tussen de werelden, en loopt voortdurend op en neer. Maar hij wakkert de spanning aan tussen het hogere en het lagere.<\/li>\n
      • De schade die door sommige van de dieren aan Yggdrasil wordt berokkend, wordt gerepareerd door de\u00a0nornen. Deze drie vrouwen zitten bij de wortels.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

        De levensboom overleeft de\u00a0Ragnar\u00f6k<\/strong><\/p>\n

        Yggdrasil staat ook centraal in de mythe van de Ragnar\u00f6k. Wanneer de levensboom begint te beven nadert dit einde van de wereld. De enige twee menselijke overlevenden (er zijn er ook enkele bij de goden),\u00a0Lif\u00a0(leven) en\u00a0Lifthrasir\u00a0(levenslust), kunnen ontkomen door zich in de takken van Yggdrasil schuil te houden, waar zij zich voeden aan ochtenddauw en de bescherming van de boom genieten:<\/p>\n

        Het loeiend vuur zal ze niet schroeien; het zal ze zelfs niet raken, en hun voedsel zal ochtenddauw zijn.
        \nDoor de takken zullen zij een nieuwe zon zien ontbranden als de wereld eindigt en opnieuw begint<\/em><\/p>\n
