(gedachte en herinnering)). Odin bezit een paard met acht benen, dat Sleipnir heet. Sleipnir is het snelste paard ter wereld en een kind van Loki en de hengst Svadilvari. Odin leeft van wijn alleen en met het vlees dat hem aan tafel werd voorgezet voed hij zijn twee wolven. De raven zend hij uit om voor hem te spioneren.<\/span><\/p>\n Odin is getrouwd met de godin Frigg.<\/span><\/p>\n Odin als god van de wijsheid<\/p>\n In de H\u00e1vam\u00e1l wordt verteld hoe Odin dankzij een daad van uiterste zelfopoffering het geheim van de runen verwierf, de bron van wijsheid en magische kennis. In het gedicht vertelt Odin zelf hoe hij negen dagen zonder eten of drinken aan de Wereldboom (Yggdrasil) heeft gehangen, tot zijn lijden hem de kracht gaf naar beneden te reiken en de runen te grijpen. Dankzij deze daad leerde Odin ook negen magische gezangen van de reus Bolthor en werd hij zo wijs dat hij achttien toverspreuken leerde die geen mens ter wereld kent. Die 18 toverspreuken hebben tot veel verwarring geleid in runenland omdat er (met name onwetenschappelijke) runologen zijn die menen dat het \u2018echte\u2019 runenalfabet daarom uit 18 runen zou moeten bestaan. Het bekendste voorbeeld is de Armanen Futhorkh.<\/p>\n De Speer van Odin<\/p>\n Odin word ook \u201cHeer van de Speer\u201d genoemd. Gungnir, de speer van Odin, is speciaal voor hem gemaakt door dwergen. Het is zijn lievelingswapen en hij sticht of sust er tweedracht mee. Wanneer Odin zijn speer Gungnir eenmaal geworpen heeft, is die speer door niets meer te stoppen. Symbolisch duidt dit erop dat Odin heerste over het punt vanwaar geen weg terug meer is \u2013 het moment waarop de speer de hand verlaat. Wie door een speer werd gedood, ging naar Walhalla om Odin te dienen. Er zijn verhalen over krijgers die een natuurlijke dood dreigden te sterven, en zichzelf verwonden met een speer om op die manier opgemerkt te worden door Odin en naar het Walhalla te mogen. Wanneer je niet op het slagveld stierf ging je naar Helheim, het land van de doden, wat lang niet zo eervol was als opgenomen worden in Walhalla.<\/p>\n
